*** UPDATE*** Save the Mount

Reprieve! The deadline has been extended to May 31. The Mount will open for the 2008 season on May 9. Remember to take a look at the Slate Magazine slide show, along with a critical essay. You can link to it here and I wrote about it in February, here.

  4. I have a photograph of Edith Wharton writing at her desk, that I found in one of her books that I bought used once. She's one of my muses. I read that thick biography of her last fall. What a life. It's hard to believe this house isn't being treated like the jewel that it is. Henry James stayed there for cri sakes.

  6. This is such a shame! I live about 40 minutes from it and when I last drove by, a couple of months ago, it just looks abandoned!
I hope that whoever takes over next will revive it!

  7. It's not online, but there's a great article on The Mount in the April 28 issue of the New Yorker.

If I win the powerball, I promise to donate $3m to save it. (gotta get a ticket now, I guess)
